My experience with the Law Springboard was an integral element in securing a training contract with Morgan Stanley, and four interviews with other law firms. After securing a place on the Springboard, I was invited to an open day at Slaughter and May, which was the first time I had visited a city law firm. After this, I was selected as one of 25 students to take part in the upReach professional experience week with Slaughter and May, which provided access to legal experience with the firm whilst staying in London. The scheme was fantastic experience, as I gained contacts and knowledge which assisted me greatly in my employability.

The Law Springboard Programme

Exclusively sponsored by

upReach’s Law Springboard is a one-year programme of personalised careers support, designed to help eligible university students looking to join the commercial law sector.

The programme aims to help you explore your career options, to increase your employability, widen your professional network, and ultimately to secure top vacation schemes.

upReach is a social mobility charity, and our objective is to support students from under-represented backgrounds. This means every student we support (we call them “upReach Associates”) must meet our general eligibility criteria.

To become an upReach Associate on this particular programme you must meet the following criteria:

University: You must currently be an undergraduate that is in full-time study. This programme is open to students at any UK university.

Degree year: This programme is suitable for students who are graduating in 2023, typically in their first year of their degree or second year of a four year degree. We are unable to accept students from any other graduation year.

Degree subject: We encourage students from any degree background to sign up. There is no need to be studying a Law degree to be eligible for this programme - what’s most important to us is your interest in the commercial law sector, not your existing knowledge.

A-Level grades: To be eligible for this programme, you need to have achieved AAB at A-Level or equivalent.*

*Please note we consider grades on a contextual basis, meaning we also take into account factors such as the school you attended or the area you live in. We believe this gives us a better indication of your true academic potential. For example, if you achieved a B in A-level Maths, you may find that your contextual grade is actually an A, once your background is taken into consideration. All applicants will receive contextualised grades when they apply.

When joining the programme, you’ll be matched with a dedicated upReach Programme Coordinator, who will get to know you and be on-hand to provide ongoing 1-to-1 support throughout your time with us.

They’ll be able to give you extensive support at each stage of the application process for vacation schemes:

  • Reviewing your CV and offering feedback
  • Reviewing your applications and cover letters for the legal sector
  • Mock interviews
  • Assessment centre preparation

As well as support from your upReach Programme Coordinator, you will also have the opportunity to:

  • Apply for an exclusive work experience opportunity with Slaughter and May
  • Apply for a professional mentor from Slaughter and May
  • Participate in insight events, like Insight Days to help you learn more about different organisations
  • Access extensive online resources, including guides to different employers, online tests, and career courses to help you understand the legal sector in more depth.
  • Sign up to daily ‘Video Forums’ (live webinars) to help you build your employability skills

upReach is able to provide this support because of our partnership with Slaughter and May, who sponsor this programme. You can find out more about which companies work with upReach - and which ones we are therefore able to provide you with more extensive application support for.

50% of students on the 2020-21 Law Springboard programme made successful applications to vacation schemes and other legal work experiences.

Not only did 15 students secure summer work experience with Slaughter and May, but many more secured vacation schemes at a range of other top commercial law firms, within the Magic and Silver Circles and beyond.

We asked participants to feedback on their experiences:

  • 100% felt that the programme helped them to make an informed decision about their career
  • 99% would rate their experience on the Law Springboard as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’
  • 95% would recommend the Law Springboard to a friend

Students highlighted the personalised nature of support on the programme: “Having a personal programme coordinator has made me feel so supported and like there’s someone who has a personal stake in my career progression.”
