Student Social Mobility Awards - 27th November 2019 | House of Lords

On 27th November, upReach held the second Student Social Mobility Awards at the House of Lords, to showcase the incredible achievements of undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds from across the UK. The event was again hosted by upReach Patron, Baroness Helena Kennedy, and supported by the Social Mobility Commission.

From over 200 nominees, 24 Awards recognised students who have excelled in their studies and beyond, and shown high potential to excel as they launch their careers, as well as individuals and organisations who have greatly supported social mobility.

Professional Services Academy - 11 March 2019

upReach held their first Professional Services Academy, which had the theme "finding the right service line for you". Mentors from Deloitte volunteered their time to share their own experiences and to help the 27 Associates who attended discover more about each service line.

Skills Workshops On Campus: February - March 2019

Throughout February and March, upReach ran skills workshops at each of their partner universities. These workshops, ran throughout the course of a whole day, provided Associates with a unique opportunity to develop a range of key employability skills.

Alumni Event - 18th February

upReach held their first alumni event of 2019 at Aviva, on their 23rd floor in central London. Over canapés and great views, alumni heard from Jessica Oghenegweke, who shared her inspiring story about how she defied great odds to achieve her dreams of working in the music industry, before becoming an anti-bullying campaigner and Social Mobility Commissioner.

Student Social Mobility Awards - 13th December

The Student Social Mobility Awards were organised by upReach to showcase the incredible achievements of undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds from across the UK. The Awards Ceremony and Reception was at the House of Lords on 13th December 2018. This event was kindly hosted by Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, Patron of upReach. Alumni Event - 27th November

upReach’s final alumni event of 2018 took place at North Highland, which gave former Associates to meet and network with one another. Alumni learnt more about networking from David Lancefield, partner at PwC, former Associate Jamal Ud-din on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and upReach CEO John Craven on the importance of alumni as upReach grow.

Manchester Office Launch Party - 15th October

Following an insight day at PwC in Manchester on 15th October, upReach launched its new regional office in Manchester, part of our ongoing commitment to tackle the UK’s social mobility issue on a national level. By opening the office, we can provide greater support to local students and offer a wider range of opportunities in the region.

The event saw upReach Associates Zach Calnan and Matthew Amoh, and alumni Saoirse Conaghan-Burnell, speak about their experiences on the programme, and Dr Fiona Christie, Director of Research and Knowledge for AGCAS, speak about the current challenges facing social mobility.

At the office launch, upReach also announced the rolling out of REAL (, a new contextual recruitment tool for graduate employers, designed to enable them to more fairly assess applicants' potential than using A-Level grades alone. Full details of REALrating can be found in the press release.

Associate Awards - 30th August

upReach hosted its Associate Awards at Bank of America, celebrating the successes of our Associates across a range of career sectors in 2017/18. In total, 22 awards were presented to Associates from universities across the UK, recognising outstanding achievement, demonstrations of upReach’s values and a commitment to improving social mobility.

Consulting Academy - 30th August

Four of upReach’s Consulting partner firms joined 50 upReach Associates at the first Consulting Academy, following the success of our Banking and Law Academies this year. Associates attended sessions run by McKinsey & Company, North Highland, 2020 Delivery and JMAN Group, giving an insight to the varied roles within consulting, through engaging workshops on consulting case studies and problem-solving tests. The consulting academy was followed by upReach’s Associate Awards, celebrating the successes and achievements in 2017/18.

Law Academy, 9th August 2018

upReach hosted their first Law Academy in partnership with Addleshaw Goddard. This exciting day gave students the opportunity to network with Trainees and Paralegals from the firm and explore the range of career opportunities on offer. upReach Associates worked in collaboration with AG trainees to tackle a legal challenge case study and develop their commercial awareness.

Banking Academy, 21st June 2018

The first upReach Banking Academy was led by a team of Goldman Sachs volunteers from a range of divisions, who participated in speed networking to share their career journeys with Associates, and led a presentation workshop to increase their commercial awareness. The Goldman Sachs volunteers trained the upReach team in the morning in advance of the Banking Academy event, enhancing the depth of support available to Associates.

Access to the Professions Review - Bank of America, 23rd May 2018

upReach gathered partner employers and universities to review the impact of our collaboration, share preliminary findings of our Employability Skills Gap research, and look ahead to contextual recruitment in the coming year. The evening was hosted by Bank of America, with upReach Associates speaking to highlight how their aspirations have been raised and networks expanded due to our partnership with the bank.

upReach Alumni event, 2nd May 2018

Allen & Overy hosted our fifth Alumni event, where 30 former Associates learnt about the "importance of Personal Brand" from Trang Chu. A professional coach and former Managing Director at Deutsche Bank and Bank of America, Trang guided Alumni on creating an authentic personal brand during their early career stages.

5 Year Anniversary, 22nd November 2017

upReach celebrated our fifth anniversary with over 70 guests hearing representatives from three of our founding partners, Deloitte, Exeter University and KPMG, discuss how we have successfully partnered to support over a thousand students over the last five years, and from an upReach Associate how upReach had helped her succeed.

Ryan Shorthouse, director of Bright Blue, reviewed the initial findings of our research into the Employability Skills Gap, and our two year Growth Catalyst Partner grant from Bank of America was announced, which we anticipate will help us grow to supporting 2000 students per year from less-advantaged backgrounds by 2020.

Careers Academies

5th April in London and 9th April in Manchester

13th December 2018

The final London Careers Academy of 2018 was kindly hosted by Aviva, which saw over 40 Associates attend a day of skills sessions led by upReach and partner employers. Associates were given the chance to attend sessions led by Allen & Overy, Aviva, Bank of America, Civil Service Fast Stream, GLG and PwC. There were also plenty of time to network opportunities after the sessions and before the upReach team headed for House of Lords for the inaugural Student Social Mobility Awards.

10th December 2018 - Manchester

The upReach team in Manchester hosted the first, and certainly not last, Careers Academy in the North of England. The range of employers, who led sessions to the 30 Associates who attended, demonstrated that there are plenty of opportunities for students looking for roles outside of London. These employers included BBC Sport, Bank of America, The Behavioural Insights Team, Civil Service Fast Stream and PwC.

10th September 2018

upReach rounded off its summer events with the September Careers Academy. 69 Associates took part in skills workshop sessions led by PwC, Nomura, Think Ahead, Civil Service Fast Stream, Unilever, Legal & General, Aviva, Bright Blue and Bank of America, exploring different career options and learning more about the application processes for internships and graduate roles.

21st August 2018

65 upReach Associates attended the first of two Summer Career Academies at upReach’s offices in Borough,. tith representatives from PwC, Bank of America, Aviva, Wellcome Trust, Bright Blue and Civil Service Fast Stream all present. There were some brilliant skills workshops, mock group assessment centres and lots of networking opportunities for Associates and employers.

6th April 2018

The first upReach Careers Academy of 2018 saw over 50 Associates attend a day of skills sessions led by upReach and partner employers. Associates each attended three sessions throughout the day, with partner employers CIL and 2020 Delivery giving an insight in to the world of strategy and management consulting, Aviva giving Associates an overview of the travel opportunities on their Global Graduate Leaders Programme and former upReach Associate Bhagya Silva sharing his experiences on life in the Civil Service Fast Stream.

8th December 2017

The upReach Christmas Careers Academy had a number of our partner employers delivering sessions throughout the day, and gave Associates an insight in to a range of career sectors. Owain Service, Managing Director of the Behavioural Insight Team, kicked off the day with an inspiring session on the importance of setting achievable goals, and was followed by sessions run by partners including JMAN, McKinsey, Aviva and Close Brothers. Associates also attended an insightful session on the Civil Service Fast Stream, delivered by former Associate and upReach secondee Amy Prewer, while Greg Simmons, Executive Director at UBS, spoke about effectively handling rebuttals and the value of resilience.

5th September 2017

upReach’s second Careers Academy of the summer built on the successes of the first event two weeks previously, with 50 Associates gaining a valuable insight in to a range of industries from a host of upReach’s partner employers. Bank of America ran insightful sessions on their in-house Law divisions, product development and a skills session to help Associates develop their teamwork skills, consultants JMAN and McKinsey ran sessions on careers in technology and management consultancy, and Unilever gave a fascinating insight in to the Retail and Consumer Goods industry. This was complemented by mock interview and personal branding sessions run throughout the day by members of the upReach team.

22nd August 2017

upReach’s inaugural Careers Academy gave 42 Associates the opportunity to network and attend sessions run by upReach’s partner employers, members of the upReach team and more. Across the day, Associates attended sessions run by partner employers McKinsey, Unilever, Bank of America, the Civil Service Fast Stream, Aviva and KPMG, each highlighting the work that they do and the opportunities they have available for undergraduates. This was complemented by a personal branding session run by Gareth Lewis, a consultant with experience in helping CEO’s develop their presence and impact, and mock interviews and CV clinics run by the upReach team.
